<image:title>Interviews - Building songs from a single line - Interviewing Ashley Suh - You’ve spoken about being surrounded by music growing up, what did that look like, how did it start?</image:title>
<image:caption>My mum, she studied piano in a college in California, so we had a grand piano in our home that I remember her practicing classical music on. My dad is actually a banker hahah, totally different, but on the weekends he would play songs on guitar (as he grew up being in church band). My grandmother studied Opera in college in Korea. I got interested in music pretty young, by age 9/10 I kind of knew I wanted to do this. It was so weird though because I didn’t like raising my hand in class, I’m very shy, I don’t like people looking at me. I knew when I had my first music class, there was a teacher called Mr S in elementary school, he would pass out lyrics to a Beatles song or something and I felt so so happy, it was crazy. I fell in love with the fact that there was always a story behind a song, and I love books. As a child it blew my mind that I could sing my stories. It all kind of grew from there, by the time I was 12 I started to try and make my own stuff. Image by Rockie</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Lily Lane craving comfort, chaos, and freedom - What themes or emotions tie your EP together?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Domesticated EP is me working through the chaos of early adulthood and realizing that all the things I used to side-eye, like stability, softness, and being grounded, actually feel really good when they are on my own terms. There is an underlying theme of "Okay, life is a lot, but maybe I am finally ready for it," in the sense that nobody is ever truly ready, we just do our best, and maybe right now I am at my best. Emotionally, it swings between vulnerability, humor, self-soothing, and that cozy confidence you feel when you stop fighting yourself. It is me figuring out who I am in love and marriage, in adulthood, in my own head, and making peace with the parts of me that want comfort just as much as they want freedom</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Sonic Aid Sheff 2025 - MILO - ‘It started off when we were tasked with planning and putting on a live music event as part of one of our uni modules this term. All three of us shared interest in doing our event for charity and specifically to aid those affected by the conflict in Gaza. We settled on supporting War Child who help children affected by the war by providing emergency aid, education and long term support as our main charity to support Sonic Aid Sheff 2025.’ ‘I see Sonic Aid Sheff becoming a yearly live music event, supporting various charities and causes as well as bringing live music back to grassroots venues and creating a supportive community. Even though this started as ‘just a uni assignment’, I feel we’ve all been passionate about this event and its values and continuing that legacy is very important especially in this day and age. And also it’s good fun.’</image:title>

<image:title>Interviews - Sonic Aid Sheff 2025 - ALEX - We met during our first year of our university degree, and we decided to work together because we get along and our ideas for this module matched. We talked a lot about what we wanted for this event and we found our visions aligned. I found working with Mati and Milo really fun and eye opening. I found that working with these two has allowed me to think more deeply about what I want to do with my career and they have allowed me to be more creative.</image:title>
<image:caption>MATI - Being that all three of us attend a music college, we naturally have a shared passion for music. This whole project started as a uni assignment, so we all initially just wanted to get a passing grade. But I personally have really enjoyed the process of organising and promoting a live music event, especially with Milo and Alex. <image:title>Interviews - Apples, Angst & Afterglow: Inside the Fluorescent World of Maisie Jean - ‘How did you choose the order for your album, was there a specific reason you wanted ‘Apples’ to be the first track?’</image:title>
<image:caption>I knew quite early on that I wanted ‘Apples’ to be the starting track as it conveys the spirit of the album well, it encapsulates the glitzy party aesthetic mixed in with grit and angst. I also knew I wanted to end with ‘One Way’ as a sort of cathartic battle cry. I think they are a good bookend and quite an effective contrast. The rest of the order sort of didn’t feel right until it felt right and then I listened to it, and it just made sense.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Interviewing Mikol Frachey: A Tennessee Whisky Girl - How do you approach the songwriting process?</image:title>
<image:caption>I don’t have a specific method for songwriting, lyrics pop into my mind at different times during the day and I’ll type them onto my phone or in a diary. Sometimes I choose to pick up my guitar, I play around to find a melody. On my website I advertise curated songwriting, it’s called ‘A Song for You’ where people can commission me to create a song for their partner, parents or friends. When I’m writing these custom-made songs I will work with my guitar or piano and try to write down a loose outline of what the song should be about. I like to let myself play and see how a song will unfold itself naturally. I always like to say that “a song is like a baby” - they’re born naturally and will become their own thing, you’re there to support the process but not control it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Building passion for creation: An interview with Rachel Stratton - 'I love it when you go to art galleries and they actually give a plaque explaining the art, and I’ll often find it a bit frustrating when art is abstract - yes it looks cool, but what is it trying to tell me? I connect more with art when it has a meaning, as you get more of a glimmer and an insight into what the artist was thinking. I enjoy the open interpretation of paintings in art galleries and delving into them, but I prefer the certainty of being told for sure what the painter was aiming for. That’s the science part of my brain haha.’</image:title>
<image:caption>Then, why do you find yourself drawn to painting landscaPes? Does it creare your subjective view of an area? ‘I do quite a lot of seascapes. My mum is Cornish so I go there a lot. Therefore, a lot of my art is Cornish landscapes, places I know well or that mean a lot to me. There is an artist, Kurt Jackson, who does loads of landscapes and scribbles words at the bottom of his paintings - like something he heard someone say when painting - and it just provides an extra layer of understanding for the viewer. You get the painting more, and that’s what I value. The individual experience.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Kelley Cole: Music Through The Eyes of a Twenty-Something Teenager - Can you tell me about the creative writing process for your upcoming single ‘Twenty Something Teenager’?</image:title>
<image:caption>My twin sister gave me the idea for the song - she had this phrase ‘twenty something teenager’ that she had been hearing people say and she said to me that maybe it could be a really cool song. This has been the first time that I have taken someone else’s suggestion for a song and made something with it. Maybe because the idea was coming from my twin, it feels like she knows my brain more than I do. Once I ran with the idea, the song itself was born out of feelings of tiredness and the stress of adult life. The stress of trying to keep all the pieces in place. The song definitely came from a place of burnout. How did I get this way? And how do I get back to how I used to be? - I’d love to have a fun sleepover, be a kid, eat lots of candy and not care about anything. Escapism is definitely a main theme within my writing recently.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Alexa Kate: Building Her Sound, Making Her Mark - If you could collaborate with any artist past or present, who would it be and why?</image:title>
<image:caption>My answer is always going to be Taylor Swift. I love her, and when I was growing up, I listened to her music all the time (and I still do!). The first song I ever learned on guitar was "Teardrops on My Guitar." Listening to someone, especially a female artist, who writes their own songs and is so amazing in the industry made me realize at a young age that this was something I could actually pursue. Besides that, she’s an incredible writer and performer, so I’d love to collaborate with her.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Alexa Kate: Building Her Sound, Making Her Mark - Is there any particular performance or venue that stands out as a favourite?</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s tough to choose because I can look back at a few performances that have been amazing, where I just felt the energy of the crowd. I feel like every show I play has something special about it for different reasons. Even if I’m opening for someone and no one in the audience knows me, it’s still incredible because you get to talk to new people, and then they know your music and come back. It’s definitely different every time, so that’s why I’m not sure if I have a favorite venue or performance. I love talking to the audience—it’s my favorite thing. Every show I play, I hope people sing the songs back to me, and they always pull through. Hearing them sing those words back is the most amazing feeling. When you write these songs, you never know if they’re going to resonate, so hearing people sing them back or even coming up to you and telling you how much they like or relate to them is incredible. I think about this all the time—there really isn’t anything like music that connects people in the same way, especially when it’s all happening in one room.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Punk Passion to Global PR: Thibaut Charmolue’s Journey with Sk8PR - Who has had the biggest influence on your musical taste? My most favourite band is the band Green Day! I became a big fan just before they released their American Idiot album which was in 2004. In 2004 I was living in the UK, so they were all over the radio and TV.</image:title>
<image:caption>How did you first become interested in music? I always listened but I properly became interested when I took my drum lessons in the UK. I never played in a band, but I was super interested in the instrument. Around 2003/2004 I really started to become super interested in punk music like Green Day but also all this stuff from before like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols. I listened to other genres, but punk music is like my pride, my go-to. There were also some videos that made me super interested in music: Green Day - International Supervideos! – Compilation (2001) No Doubt The Videos 1992-2003 (2004)</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Interviewing Evie Calabasas - What inspired you to start making music?</image:title>
<image:caption>I've been making music for over 15 years now. I started playing guitar when I was six, began singing around 12 or 13, and started releasing music in 2020 when I was 19. But my journey truly began when I started writing and creating music at 13. It's been a long process of growth and evolution, but music has always been a huge part of my life—and it still is today. As for what inspired me, it might sound a bit silly, but it was Taylor Swift. I vividly remember sitting on the sofa when I was six years old, watching one of her performances on TV. I was completely captivated—her stage presence, her music, her songwriting, and the way she connected with the audience were incredible to me. I instantly became a fan and knew, in that moment, that I wanted to do what she was doing. I wanted to create music, perform, and build that kind of connection with people. I just thought ‘I want that to be me one day’.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Interviews - Interviewing Evie Calabasas - How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your songs?</image:title>
<image:caption>I’d describe my sound as a blend of genres - there’s definitely a strong pop influence, with elements of indie and acoustic as well. Since I write my songs on guitar and record the first drafts that way, there’s often a heavy acoustic feel to them. But lately, I’ve been incorporating more electronic elements, moving towards a style similar to The 1975. Overall, I’d say my music has a mix of Taylor Swift, The 1975, and Sam Fender vibes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Interviewing Evie Calabasas - And I'm guessing that you’ve done some live shows of your own – have there been any moments where you felt as though you were really making a mark in music?</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to play at a massive festival in Italy as an opening act in front of more than 5,000 people. I was so nervous - I even told my friends they had to be front row because if they weren’t there, I’d probably throw up from nerves! After my set, these two girls came up to me and told me they had travelled just to see me play, which I found so incredibly sweet. They literally got on a bus and made the trip just to watch my 30-minute set. We started talking, and they told me how much my music meant to them. That moment really stuck with me because, for the first time, I truly felt that people were connecting with my music in a real, meaningful way. It was such a special experience, and I absolutely loved it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Mark Wrigley: Bridging Technology and Creativity Through Photography and Innovation - Could you tell us about your journey from technologist to your creative work? What inspired this shift? So, I kind of don’t see a division between the two as I see technology as being creative as well because there is always more than one way to do something. In technology there is a great deal of design, if you look at companies like Apple and the impact of design on their products. I was thinking about this the other day I worked in designing tech stuff and again there is always more than one way to do things. I think there are a lot of similarities between what people would classically call a creative process and a design process. What drew you to photography, you said you ‘had always loved it and were the kid at school with a camera in class’, what prompted this?</image:title>
<image:caption>I think there are a couple of things really. I have never been officially diagnosed but I am pretty sure I’m dyslexic, so in some respects photography becomes almost like a language. It’s a way of recording without words. When I was really quite small maybe 6 or 8, my father had a dark room, and it felt like magic. This was long ago, but to see a photo develop in a tray and the image appear from a blank piece of paper just got me. So, there are a lot of pictures of me when I was a kid with a camera in my hand and it has just been something I have always done. It is interesting now with iPhones and camera phones how normal it has become. I have a big archive of photographs and as you go further back in time there are fewer and fewer photos. It seems a natural language.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Loane Bobillier: The Art of Blending Cultures and Creativity - Having lived in the UK, Switzerland, China, and Singapore do you think these diverse cultures have influenced your artwork?</image:title>
<image:caption>Definitely, a lot of my work is based primarily around who I am as an individual and where I come from. A lot of my work, especially whilst I was at university was about delving into the individual and the self. I started my life in Switzerland, then China when I was four and I was eight when I moved to Singapore so in these differing environments there are a lot of unique colours, people, environments, smells, food and more. All of that comes together and I want to present these different senses in a creative way. I use a lot of those colours in my own art. I surround myself with it in my home too, pieces from many different countries that remind me of where I have been. Recently with my new necklace designs I’ve been using gold leaf which is inspired by the gold you see often in Asia around temples, during Chinese New Year, Hong Baos and gold coins to celebrate wealth and prosperity. The use of gold leaf in my practice has definitely been taken from my heavy Asian influences.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Philip Copestake: Chasing Childlike Creativity - How did you start making art? Is this a career for you or a hobby?</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve never thought of my artwork as a hobby, it’s always been a passion for me. Doing biology, back in the day, we would have to do dissections and draw them - I’ve still got some of my old dissection drawings actually. As a teenager, I was also a keen birdwatcher so I was always very interested in wildlife art. Art has always been a big thing for me, selling a few pieces over the years has been great but it is very much a personal thing for me. I’ve got my own website set up now and a blog. I admire people who can make art into a career, social media has made marketing a lot easier but it is nonetheless very hard work. I just love looking at art, trying to figure out how artists have created what they have - going around an art gallery with me can be a very tedious process, I’ll stare at a painting for 10 minutes. Making art a career brings that risk that you are making art for others, and for what sells, I very much enjoy the intimacy and privacy of the process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Alice Ede: From Piano Lessons to Spotlight Performances</image:title>
<image:caption>So, I can’t even remember when I first started playing music, I was just so young. My dad was a DJ when I was growing up – an 80s DJ! I grew up listening to 80s music, which is like the complete opposite to what I make now. I think always having music on in the house definitely from an early age meant even if I wasn’t playing I was listening to music. My grandma also played the piano and she taught me how to play, when I was about 9 or 10. I was singing on my dad’s karaoke when I was like really little, ‘Lazy Town’ – god knows how everyone in the pub didn’t walk out hahaha. In fact, I think I sang ‘Sherry Baby’ and then ‘Lazy Town’, I had a really select taste in music back then. But yeah, piano was the first instrument I learnt, which a lot of people are surprised about because I play guitar pretty much everywhere now. So, I learnt that, and I just loved playing and then I started singing whilst playing and then I picked up the guitar in lockdown, so I was around fourteen/fifteen. I was self-taught on that because I was bored in lockdown!</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Daphne Lepla: Flamenco, Fusion and Creativity - Are there any aspects of flamenco that you think resonate with you as a person? Any part of the Flamenco dancing history maybe?</image:title>
<image:caption>In general, it is a type of dance that is very old and has existed for ages, nobody really knows when it exactly started, which I think is amazing. There are about seventy different styles called Palos. They are all Flamenco, so they are similar in a way, but they all have different kinds of music, different tempo, different counts, different subjects and emotions. I love that because you can put different parts of yourself in the dance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interviews - Daphne Lepla: Flamenco, Fusion and Creativity - If you could perform in any venue in the world, where would you choose?</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes my dream would be to perform somewhere in Spain, of course because that’s where Flamenco is from and I have never really performed there, so I would love that! Important theatres here in Belgium would also be great because this is also my home and there are a few theatres here that I would love to perform in some day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - The Brutalist: An “American” epic, or something more? - I think if you’re planning on seeing this film, a healthy approach would be to go in open-minded; willing to be taken down paths you hadn’t expected, or be left feeling ways you didn’t feel were initially suggested. The film undoubtedly borrows some of its baser construction materials from influences like The Godfather, Once Upon a Time in America, and There Will Be Blood - but to force The Brutalist into this genre of film is ultimately reductive and misleading. It’s near impossible to encounter this film without hearing the words “American epic”, but I’m not so sure they fit. “Epic”, certainly - “American”, not so much… In terms of tone and style, The Brutalist is far more accurately described as European, leaning more towards recent films like The Zone of Interest rather than The Killers of the Flower Moon. But that is not to say that director Brady Corbet is unaware of this dichotomy.</image:title>

<image:title>Reviews - 5 Classic Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading - 1. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov</image:title>
<image:caption>For when you want to read something deeply unsettling, yet disturbingly beautiful. Very few books are as controversial, yet so beautifully written as Lolita. A story told from the perspective of Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged man obsessed with a 12-year-old girl, is nothing short of disturbing. And yet, Nabokov’s crafts his sentences with such elegance and lyricism that every page is so intoxicating that it almost masks the horror lurking beneath it. It is a novel about power and manipulation and how language can distort reality. A masterclass in unreliable narration that will haunt you in the best way possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - 5 Classic Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading - 2. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka</image:title>
<image:caption>For when you want a quick existential crisis. This is a strange tale, yet a gripping tale. Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect, which Kafka creatively taps into complex themes of capitalism, irrelevance, famil,y and many more. Waking up one day to being no longer useful, no longer loved, no longer human. It’s tragic. It’s absurd. It’s unforgettable. A short story that is perfect for getting back into reading without the intimidation of a doorstopper novel.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - 5 Classic Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading - 3. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë</image:title>
<image:caption>For when you want a complex, gothic, feminist romance. Say goodbye to predictable love stories and let Jane Eyre pull you into a world where love is moody, atmospheric, and emotionally intense. Jane is not your typical 19th-century female protagonist. She’s poor, plain, and utterly self-aware. But, her strength is her refusal to settle for anything less than what she deserves, even when it means walking away from someone you admire. All in one, you have a love story, a ghost story, and a feminist manifesto. A timeless book to get yourself lost in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - 5 Classic Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading - 4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald</image:title>
<image:caption>For when you want to feel nostalgic. Some books just have a memorable aesthetic. The Great Gatsby is one of them. It’s all champagne, jazz, and glittering parties - until you look closer and see the loneliness, the longing, and the flawed American Dream. Gatsby himself is one of literature’s greatest tragic figures, a man so consumed by the past, that he destroys his future, reminding us that ‘You can’t repeat the past’. Fitzgerald’s writing is so lyric, so full of melancholy beauty, that even if this was once read in school, it is so worth revisiting it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - 5 Classic Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading - 5. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath</image:title>
<image:caption>For when you want something so dark, poetic, and painfully real. A deeply personal, raw, and lyrical novel that I can never stop re-reading. It follows Esther Greenwood’s slow and raw spiral into depression as she tries to navigate the expectations placed on young women. It’s a book about ambition, disillusionment, and the feeling of being trapped. Trapped by mental illnesses, gender roles, or simply the weight of your own expectations. Despite its darkness, it’s sharp, witty, and observant, making this book overwhelmingly stick with you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - If you want a laugh…</image:title>
<image:caption>Burn After Reading (top left): This film receives a 5/5 from me every single time I watch it. Could I even explain the plot to you? No, but give it a watch and find out for yourself. Hot Rod (top right): This year I decided to add ‘Hot Rod’ to my top four on letterboxd. If that doesn’t tell you something about Andy Samberg’s incredible comedic timing, then what will? Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (bottom left): Some might refer to this comedy as a bit of a classic. With a star-studded cast including Will Ferrel, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Ben Stiller & Harrison Ford (just to name a few), what’s not to enjoy? The Nice Guys (bottom right): Whilst this one is a recent watch for me, and one of my first times seeing Ryan Gosling or Russel Crowe in a more comedic role, it did not disappoint. Packed with action, drama, and of course comedy this one should definitely cheer you up this January.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - If you want to embrace those “JANuary Blues”…</image:title>
<image:caption>Aftersun (top left): For me, this is Paul Mescal’s best role yet, other than perhaps his stand out performance as Connell in ‘Normal People’. The soundtrack, acting, cinematography, but especially the soundtrack in this film are exquisite!! Beautiful Boy (top right): If you’ve read my review of Timothée Chalamet’s filmography you’ll know exactly how I feel about Beautiful Boy. To put it simply it sits at top spot for my favourite role of Chalamet’s. His performance is sensitive, raw, and authentic. Bridge to Terabithia (bottom left): If you want to delve into your past and relieve the trauma of watching this film for the first time – I dare you! Possibly the most perfect film for embracing those “January blues”. Iron Claw (bottom right): Another contender for my Letterboxd top four, whilst it hasn’t made it yet, it certainly could when I inevitably watch it for the fourth time. I don’t believe that Zac Efron got quite enough credit for his impeccable acting in this devastating film.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - If you want to feel inspired or encouraged…</image:title>
<image:caption>50/50 (top left): I only watched this film last month and I have to say I wasn’t expecting too much from it. Whilst it may not have won awards, it’s an easy watch with the one and only Joseph Gordon-Levitt and I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Soul (top right): If you still haven’t seen this film? Please put this on your list or just relax and press play right now. All I can say is that it is the definition of a must-watch. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (bottom left): This short film is a Bafta and Oscar Nominated animation that is extremely inspiring and heartfelt. Surely, you’re intrigued just from the picture? The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (bottom right): Another recent watch for me, even though over the years I’ve heard a lot of people rave about this film. So, if you’re like me and have not given this one a chance yet, please let me be the one to encourage you. This film is the epitome of inspiration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - When all you need is notalgia…</image:title>
<image:caption>Dumbo (top left): Whilst it’s not the hottest take, Dumbo is incredibly adorable and that’s one of the best reasons I can give you to watch the film! Back to the Future (top right): A film I adore so much I decided to write my dissertation on it! This film is such a classic that I’m guessing you’ve already seen it before. If that’s not the case please please please watch it now. Almost Famous (bottom left): ‘Almost famous’ made me feel nostalgic for and obsessed with a time period that I wasn’t even alive during. Whilst odd at times, this film has a dreamy lens over it that glamourises the joy of being in a band or being a groupie in the 70s. Stand By Me (bottom right): Possibly the most classic coming of age film to date! ‘Stand By Me’ is a take on Stephen King’s book ‘The Body’. It is brimming with so many differnet emotions that make this group of a four so gripping to watch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - When the plot has to centre around sound…</image:title>
<image:caption>Sound of Metal (top left): This film won an Academy Award and BAFTA for best sound, the ability to change the entire feeling of a scene and disorient viewers with the editing of the sound was incredible. Riz Ahmed’s performance is outstanding, he gives the film needed focus and I can’t imagine this character being acted by anyone else. La La Land (top right): You don’t need me to tell you about ‘La La Land’, at least I hope you don’t. This film is one of two Damien Chazelle films in this category, showcasing just how much Chazelle excels when experimenting with sound & music. Tick Tick Boom (bottom left): If you choose this film to be in your watchlist this January, I implore you to watch a comparison video between Andrew Garfield’s performance and Jonathan Larson’s. It’s a feat of acting from Garfield! Whiplash (bottom right): I struggled to know what exactly to say about this film other than how much I am obsessed with the soundtrack and the acting of both Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons. The use of colour, like ‘La La Land’, is always purposeful and significant. The tension, stress, love, passion, anger and more in this film are all exquisitely performed and controlled.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - Feels like a warm hug…</image:title>
<image:caption>Little Women 2019 (top left): Whilst, admittedly, I have never seen the previous Little Women film. I can safely state I’m certain this one would be my favourite. Again, we see a star-studded cast perfectly emulate the characters of Louisa May Alcott. Greta Gerwig deserves so much appreciation! Singin’ In The Rain (top right): This film was always on in my grandma’s house growing up and rightly so! A classic, that will still entertain me to this day. The music is beautiful and the sheer talent of these performers is commendable. The Incredibles (bottom left): INCREDIBLE!!! What more is there to say? 10 things I hate about you (bottom right): This film for me is one of my favourite romcoms out there, Heath Ledger’s talent doesn’t go amiss in this loose adaption of Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of The Shrew’. Kat & Patrick’s romance is a classic enemies to lovers, done so so well!</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - January Watchlist: Films For Any Mood This Month - My Miscellaneous Special Mentions…</image:title>
<image:caption>The Double (top left): The fact that Richard Ayoade is the director of this film, should tell you all need to know. Jesse Eisenberg takes on his usual bumbling persona and stuns in this unusual and intriguing film. Bicycle Thieves (top right): Admittedly, I had to watch this film as part of my first-year uni experience. However, I was very pleased that I did. This Academy Award winning film is a rich story surrounding a father and his young son. It is a film that defined the neo-realism era and rightly so! I urge you to not just watch but to read more about this film too. Snatch (bottom left): Snatch is Guy Ritchie at his best! This film brings everything you could possibly need to keep you entertained and hooked. Each actor produces their own stand-out performance in this crime-comedy. The Royal Tenenbaums (bottom right): Last, but of course, not least I had to end with a Wes Anderson film! This film is everything all at once, it’s comedic, wacky, clever and very well thought out. So worthy of your time and will definitely cure those “January blues”!</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - ‘We Live in Time’ Film Review - Audiences might be put off by the predictability of the film’s plot, however this certainly is the objective of director John Crowley who demonstrates the familiar, harsh reality that sometimes life is just that, predictable. ‘We Live in Time’ is a love story that is not particularly unique or extraordinarily magnificent. It is a love story that we hear of and see so often which is what makes the film so special.</image:title>

<image:title>Reviews - ‘No Friend But the Mountains’ A Much Needed Humanisation of Asylum - To be completely transparent, ‘No Friend but the Mountains’ is not an easy read: it is often dark and disturbing - but it is realistic, and it is a much needed piece of literature. Boochani sheds light on his experiences as an asylum seeker, a highly stigmatised category of migrant, who sought refuge in Australia though was detained on one of Papa New Guinea’s islands as part of the country’s 2001 ‘Pacific Solution’ policy. Under international law, this action taken by Australia has since been deemed unlawful yet, at the time, criticism was often shut down by arguments focused on the supposed ‘illegality’ of asylum movements. Crossing borders without documentation is illegal, however as many often do not understand - crossing borders for fear of persecution (without documentation) is not an illegal act and states have the responsibility to protect these migrants. Boochani’s book addresses this, he demonstrates how movements of this nature are taken out of necessity and choices to endanger one’s life by crossing oceans are not made or taken lightly.</image:title>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Interstellar (2014)</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s start from the very beginning, the very first film I saw of Timothée’s was Interstellar (2014). Considering Chalamet’s character was only present for the first half of the film I’ll keep this review short. Timothee plays Tom, the clearly lesser appreciated child of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey). Whilst their bond was definitely no where near as central to the plotline as was Murph and Coop’s, Chalamet’s role in Interstellar could definitely have set him up for some incredible new projects. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Hot Summer Nights (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>The next film in Chalamet’s filmography was Hot Summer Nights (2017), in which Chalamet takes on the role of Daniel Middleton a boy who perhaps goes too far into the drug trade, he certainly comes of age in this film and learns what it is to get in over his head. Admittedly, I probably would never have watched this film without me undertaking the project of watching a lot of his other works. I truly believe that Timothée carries this film on his back, whilst the film mirrors its title through the directors use of sun-drenched shots and the constant undercurrent of nostalgia, it definitely lacks in other areas. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★½</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Call Me By Your Name (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>We finally got around to it – next up is Call Me By Your Name (2017). There is no doubt that Luca Guadagnino’s film was responsible for Chalamet’s ascent into being unanimously thought of as an A-list actor. If you’ve not seen this film yet, honestly where have you been? I’ll give you the overview anyways, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman we follow Timothée’s character Elio through his summer of 1983. I’m personally so excited to see Guadagnino’s new film Queer, the director consistently and effortlessly depicts love as a natural and unstoppable force. Timothée perfectly captures the book’s Elio and his vulnerable surrender to the overwhelming power of his love for Oliver. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Lady Bird (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Timothée plays Kyle, an aloof and pretentious high schooler (who’s not like other boys) in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. He perfectly embodies the classic "too cool for school" stereotype with his political cynicism, emotional unavailability, disdain for authority—and, of course, the fact that he's in a band. Kyle is deliberately crafted to embody stereotypes, serving as a foil to Saoirse Ronan’s character, and Chalamet really puts on quite the performance. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Beautiful Boy (2018)</image:title>
<image:caption>This film currently sits at the top spot for my favourite role of Chalamet’s. Beautiful Boy is something I could rewatch again and again and I would still cry just as much as I did the previous time. Timothée’s performance here deserves so much credit and truly merits acclaim. Beautiful Boy is based on the memoirs Beautiful Boy by David Sheff & Tweak by Nic Sheff. The film devastatingly explores the harrowing impact of addiction on a family (specifically a father & son bond). Timothée’s portrayal of Nic is sensitive, raw and authentic. He brings so much humanity to this role that it creates space for greater empathy for Nic & the many other people struggling with addiction, rather than focusing solely on the effect of this on the family. I could never have rated this film any lower than five out of five! My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Little Women (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Chalamet next took on the iconic role of Laurie in Little Women. Starring alongside Saoirse Ronan again, he brings a youthful enthusiasm & yet again emotional vulnerability to this film. His arc progresses throughout the film as he grapples with the realisation of his unrequited love for Jo and later finds the comfort and solace he always needed in Amy. As Timothée Chalamet takes on more blockbuster roles, his acting ability evolves not gradually, but in significant leaps. He performs the role of Laurie with a delicate balance of vulnerability, humor, sarcastic wit, and unrelenting love. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★½</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - The King (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>The King seems to receive a lot of mixed reviews and is definitely not commonly the film that would come to mind when one thinks of Timothée’s filmography. However, whilst my memory of this film is slightly hazy I do remember really enjoying watching it. His acting in this role is marked by a restraint that aptly reflects the stoic nature expected of a king. Could possibly be marked as one of his most challenging roles! My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★½</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - The French Dispatch (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course next up in his filmography was a role in a Wes Anderson film, and he commits to the flamboyent and overly stylised world that a Wes Anderson classic demands. Chalamet was perfect for the role of Zeffirelli who embodies youthful passion and an eagerness to challenge societal norms. Whilst not a massive character in this film his performance definitely makes him a memorable one. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Dune: Part One (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>With Denis Villeneuve stating that he ‘needed an old soul in the body of a teenager’, Timothee was his choice for the character of Paul Atreides. Even amidst the grandeur and excess of an otherworldly setting like Dune, the film requires a raw human intensity to anchor the epic and make it somewhat relatable for an audience to tune in to. Timothée delivers exactly that infusing this character with his usual level of emotional depth - bridging that gap between the extraordinary and the familiar. It was interesting to see Chalamet incorporate aspects of his signature acting style into a sci-fi film. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Don’t Look Up (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Yule, Yule, Yule! Despite this being a role with limited screentime Yule adds humour and becomes a suprising love interest for Jennifer Lawrence’s character. In such a small role, he manages to create a character that is completely multifaceted. Whilst Yule is clearly a stereotypical portrayal of youth serving as the film’s much needed comic relief, he also stands out as a suprisingly grounded and heartfelt character. Yule is an embodiment of someone that can find meaning in the simple, the small, and the most human experiences rather than needing and wanting and expecting trivial things like many of the other characters in this film. <image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - Bones and All (2022)</image:title>
<image:caption>Another Luca Guadagnino film that sees Timothée deliver a deeply emotional performance. This romantic horror film showcases Chalamet’s incredible range, particularly through his ability to portray the tragic duality of Lee. Yet again, Luca and Timothée create a space on screen that highlights the intense vulnerabilities caused by love. Taylor Russell enhances the film with her compelling performance and makes the chemistry between both characters utterly undeniable. Both actors demonstrate a remarkable ability to evoke empathy for even the most morally complex of characters. Though the film is unsettling and gory, it’s the intense love story that truly captivates, drawing you in and holding your attention throughout. My Letterboxd Rating: ★★★½ on rewatch could be a ★★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Timothée Chalamet: Building a Legacy - WONKA (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>Now, not to end this review on a bad note but I personally wasn’t the greatest fan of Wonka. Whilst Chalamet offers his usual charm, emotional depth and vulnerability - I felt a disconnect. I think the performance was great and just what it needed to be, eccentric and passionate. However after witnessing such iconic Willy Wonka’s like Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp it’s always going to be difficult not to prefer a previous version. Maybe it’s nostalgia and a lack of a personal need for a remake/prequel or maybe the film just didn’t grip me like his other roles have! My Letterboxd Rating: ★★½ possibly ★★★</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews - Wunderhorse at the People Watching Tour - They kicked off with the title track of their second album ‘Midas’, with a heavy, distorted guitar riff that immediately pulls you into its grungy, 90’s inspired sound. Loud and relentless, it’s the kind of track that would have felt right at home on a Nirvana album. They also added classics from their debut album ‘Cub’. When the strobe lights faded to purple, I found it hard to contain my excitement. Having missed ‘Purple’ off the setlist the first-time round, finally hearing it live was a long-awaited payoff, and Slater’s vocals did not disappoint. Delivered with raspy urgency, hit with even more power in person, I was truly lost within the extended rendition of the song.</image:title>

<image:title>Reviews - Kat Eaton Live Review - Last Thursday I had the opportunity to watch Kat Eaton perform her last gig of the year, in Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studios. The venue was a cosy and intimate space which Kat effortlessly captivated with her Northern charm. As someone who has never encountered Kat’s music before, I must say that I was unsure of what to expect in her performance but I thoroughly enjoyed the night. Kat’s stage presence was impressive and she easily held the attention of the audience, everyone mesmerised into silence each time she began to sing.</image:title>
